Back to School for Children with Hearing Loss

Going back to school can be a challenging time for any child, but when there’s a hearing impairment involved, organisation and support really matter. As a hearing care specialist, I know that with the right tools, everything can go much more smoothly.

In this article I’ll share some recommendations with a very practical, everyday-focused approach.

Getting hearing aids ready for the new school year

One of the first things we check at this time of year is the condition of the hearing aids. After summer, there can be a build-up of moisture, dirt or minor wear. This can affect the hearing aid’s performance right when the child needs it working at its best.

Basic tips I always recommend:

  • Check the condition of the tubing, earmoulds and microphones.
  • Check the charge level or change the batteries.
  • Get a professional cleaning done if it hasn’t been done in a while.
  • Make sure the hearing aid fits well and there’s no whistling or discomfort.

It’s also a good time to assess whether the hearing aid is still the best fit for their age, type of hearing loss, and school environment.

Coordinating with the school

One of the keys to success is smooth communication between the family and the school. In many cases, teachers don’t have specific training on hearing, so it’s very helpful to give them clear, simple information.

What I recommend discussing with the school:

  • Explain the child’s hearing loss and how it affects their day-to-day.
  • Explain how their hearing aids or implants work.
  • Mention whether they use a remote microphone and how to switch it on.
  • Point out if they need to sit near the front or in good lighting.
  • Remind staff that instructions should be given visually and clearly.

If the child has an individual support plan, this is a good time to review and update it with the school’s support team.

Technical resources that can help

Hearing aids have come a long way and now offer very useful features for school environments. But sometimes extra support is needed to make listening and communication easier.

Some recommended resources:

  • Remote microphones: let the child hear the teacher directly, even with noise or distance in the way.
  • FM or Roger systems: very effective in large or noisy classrooms.
  • Transcription or captioning apps: especially useful for teenagers.
  • Portable chargers for rechargeable hearing aids.
  • Custom earplugs for sports or swimming pool activities.

It’s important to try out these resources before the school year starts, and to make sure both the child and their teachers know how to use them.

Building self-esteem and independence

The emotional side of things is essential. Some children may feel different or self-conscious about wearing hearing aids. At home, we can help a great deal by building their self-esteem and giving them tools to become more independent.

Practical tips for families:

  • Talk openly about hearing loss.
  • Practise at home how to ask someone to repeat something they didn’t catch.
  • Encourage the child to know how to switch their hearing aids on and off and take care of them.
  • Help them see their hearing aids as a help, not a burden.
  • Choose fun colours, stickers or cases so they can personalise them.

When a child understands their hearing loss and feels supported, their confidence grows, and that shows in the classroom.

Relationships with classmates

The social environment matters too. Sometimes classmates don’t understand why a child wears hearing aids or needs things repeated. In those cases, explaining it naturally and in an age-appropriate way usually helps a lot.

Ideas that can be introduced in the classroom:

  • Children’s stories or books about kids who wear hearing aids.
  • Games or activities to help children see things from another’s perspective.
  • Activities that promote respect and inclusion.

As long as the child’s privacy is respected and they feel comfortable with it, talking openly in class can create a much more understanding atmosphere.

Limitations worth bearing in mind

Although today’s hearing aids offer many advantages, it’s also important to be realistic. There are situations where listening can still be difficult, such as:

  • Environments with a lot of background noise.
  • Classrooms with poor acoustics or echo.
  • Group activities where several people speak at once.

In those cases, it’s best to combine hearing aid use with supporting strategies: facing the child when speaking, giving instructions in writing as well, or reinforcing with images.

Going back to school for a child with hearing loss takes a bit more organisation, but it’s also a great opportunity to build their independence, self-esteem and ability to adapt to their surroundings.

As a hearing care specialist, I know the key lies in communication between everyone involved: family, school and professionals.

With well-fitted hearing aids, the right resources, and an environment that understands their needs, a child can enjoy their school years just like any other. It’s not about removing every difficulty, but about giving them meaning and concrete solutions.
