As a hearing care specialist, every time someone comes into our centre unsure which hearing aid to choose, I always think the same thing: it’s not just about fitting a device into the ear. It’s about finding a solution that fits their lifestyle, their specific hearing needs and, above all, their comfort. Today I want to talk about one of the models that’s impressed me most for its balance of advanced technology, personalisation and ease of use: Oticon Intent hearing aids.
The first thing I’d highlight about Oticon Intent is how natural the listening experience is, even in complex environments. If you go to a restaurant or a family gathering, you know how hard it can be to follow a conversation amid all that noise. These hearing aids help you pick out voices more clearly, without having to keep turning the volume up and down.
Key features of Oticon Intent
1. Fast, efficient sound processor
Oticon has built in a very fast processing system that improves speech understanding in places with background noise. This not only improves comprehension, it also prevents the exhaustion many people with hearing loss feel when they’re “straining” to hear — letting you follow voices without having to constantly adjust the volume.
2. Bluetooth connectivity
Thanks to wireless connectivity, you can pair Oticon Intent with devices like mobile phones and TVs. This not only makes it easier to take calls and listen to music, it also adds flexibility as they adapt to different daily activities.
3. Apps for personalising the sound
Thanks to compatible apps, you can easily adjust the volume or switch between listening programmes depending on your surroundings. I find this especially useful for anyone who wants more control without always relying on their hearing care specialist.
4. Smart noise reduction
Oticon Intent includes a noise reduction system, which helps you focus on what you want to hear and reduces the impact of background sounds, improving the listening experience in noisy environments.
Clear advantages for different lifestyles
Clarity in noisy environments
One of the biggest advantages is the ability to separate speech from noise. This makes them ideal if you’re often out in crowded places, or if you simply value being able to hold conversations without interruptions.
Versatile connectivity
Being able to use them like wireless headphones makes them a very well-rounded option. You’re not just improving your hearing, but your everyday communication too.
All-day comfort
They’re designed to be comfortable and stay well in place. They also adapt automatically to different environments, so you don’t have to keep making adjustments.
Limitations worth bearing in mind
Battery life
If you use the wireless features a lot, you’ll probably need to charge the battery more often. This isn’t a big issue, but it’s worth keeping in mind if you spend many hours away from home.
Learning curve
Since they have several advanced features, they can feel a bit overwhelming at first for anyone not used to this kind of technology. Even so, with a little practice, they become very intuitive.
Mid-to-high price
They sit in a somewhat higher price range than other models, but this is offset by the sound quality and personalisation on offer. That said, if your lifestyle doesn’t call for so many features, there are other options that might suit you better.
Practical recommendations by user type
If you use your phone or TV a lot
Bluetooth connectivity is a real plus if you often talk on the phone or watch series and films. Hearing everything directly through your hearing aids is very convenient.
If you spend time in noisy environments
Ideal if you go to restaurants, meetings, markets, or any setting with several sounds at once. Oticon Intent is designed to help you understand better without feeling overwhelmed.
If you’re sensitive to background noise
The noise reduction helps you concentrate and avoid ending the day with listening fatigue. Highly recommended if excess sound bothers you.
If it’s your first hearing aid
App compatibility makes Oticon Intent easy to use and set up, which can be helpful for anyone getting used to this kind of technology.
Design and comparison with other models
We’ve covered the technical features, but it’s also worth talking about how these hearing aids look, since the brand offers a wide range of colours to choose from: chroma beige, silver grey, grey, terracotta, wenge brown, steel grey, diamond black, honey beige and sky blue.
Many of these colours are also found on other brands. In fact, Bernafon, another of the top brands and part of the same group as Oticon, offers what’s aesthetically the same model in terms of size and design, with a very similar colour range. It’s a design that, while comfortable to wear and discreet, isn’t quite as discreet as the Signia Pure IX, which in our view as hearing care specialists has a different kind of design that makes it a bit smaller. That’s not to say Oticon Intent and Bernafon Encanta aren’t small, but if we’re comparing for the most discreet design, that’s our impression.
The difference between the two comes down to technology: Bernafon may stand out for its performance and power, but its acoustic adaptation across different environments isn’t quite as refined as Oticon’s. The difference also shows in price, since Oticon is somewhat more expensive than Bernafon.
My advice as a hearing care specialist
To sum up, when choosing between one and the other, we need to weigh up different factors depending on what we need, what we can afford, and what actually solves our day-to-day problem. It’s worth considering whether you want or need connectivity, since not every model from either brand is compatible with every phone. If that’s the case, it’s worth carefully assessing whether a high-tech hearing aid — which can be expensive — actually offers you what you’re looking for. That said, it’s true that a phone is always something we can more easily change.
Something to bear in mind…
Then there are cases where people lead a very quiet lifestyle and rarely spend time in noisy environments, so they won’t need such a high-tech hearing aid either. If they like the design and find the sound comfortable and natural, they can always opt for lower ranges from the same brand, or even try the sister brand Bernafon, which, as mentioned, looks the same and is also one of the leading brands on the market, so it won’t disappoint either.
Ultimately, choosing one hearing aid over another will always come down to your needs and your day-to-day lifestyle, which can make choosing the right hearing aid easier or harder.
Choosing a hearing aid will directly shape your everyday experience, and making an informed choice is the key to enjoying clear, comfortable sound suited to your needs.
