Tips for Travelling with Hearing Aids in Summer

Travelling is always a pleasure. Whether it’s a weekend getaway, a family holiday or a big adventure on the other side of the world, breaking from routine fills us with energy. But if you wear hearing aids, like many of our patients, it’s important to keep a few recommendations in mind so your trip doesn’t become a challenge for your hearing health or for your devices working properly.

Summer also adds factors like heat, humidity, sweat and extended time outdoors, which makes it even more important to take precautions so your hearing aids can go with you smoothly through every stage of the trip. That’s why in this article I’ve gathered the best tips I usually give in clinic, so you can enjoy your holidays with peace of mind, taking the best possible care of your hearing aids and, above all, your hearing.

Planning: what shouldn’t be missing from your suitcase

One of the keys to travelling with hearing aids without any hiccups is bringing everything you need for their daily maintenance. A good travel kit can save you discomfort, improvisation and awkward situations at your destination. I recommend preparing a small bag or case in advance that includes:

  • Your hearing aids’ original case (hard, sturdy and with a secure closure)
  • A microfibre cloth and your usual cleaning brush
  • Drying capsules or a portable dehumidifier
  • Spare batteries if your model isn’t rechargeable, or the charger and adapter if it is
  • Spare filters and wax guards
  • Protective covers against sweat and dust (very useful in summer)
  • If you’re flying, compatible audio adapters so you can enjoy the in-flight entertainment system

Bringing these items with you doesn’t take up much space, but it gives you peace of mind, letting you clean, dry, protect and maintain your hearing aids throughout your stay, wherever you’re headed.

Safety in transit: how to carry them correctly

Whenever you travel, it’s best to keep your hearing aids and their kit in your hand luggage. Leaving them in checked baggage isn’t a good idea, as they could get lost, knocked around, or exposed to unsuitable temperatures, especially if you’re flying.

You can go through security checks with your hearing aids in. There’s no need to remove them for the scanner, but if you’re carrying moulds, batteries or accessories, it’s worth letting security staff know to avoid any confusion. Also remember to switch off or set your hearing aids to flight mode if your model requires it.

Preventing heat and humidity damage

Once you’re at your destination, that’s when you need to pay closest attention to your surroundings. Heat, ambient humidity, sweat and even sudden temperature changes can affect how your devices work.

In hot or humid places, it’s essential to dry your hearing aids well every night. Use a dehumidifier, or if you don’t have one, drying capsules in the case. Avoid leaving them near windows, in direct sun, or in the bathroom after a hot shower. It’s best to always store them somewhere cool, dry and well ventilated.

If you’re going to spend time at the beach, make sure to keep your hearing aids away from sand, salt water and sunscreen, as these can seriously damage the microphones and other components.

Pool or sea? Essential precautions

One of the questions I get asked most in summer is whether you can swim with hearing aids in. The answer is no. Even water-resistant models aren’t designed for prolonged immersion or frequent contact with salt or chlorine.

If you’re going for a swim, leave your hearing aids somewhere safe. And if they accidentally get wet, switch them off as soon as possible, remove the battery, and place them in the dehumidifier. Don’t try to dry them with a hairdryer or direct heat, as this could cause further damage.

At the beach or pool, always keep the case with you. That way you can put your hearing aids away safely if you’re going in the water or if you notice sweat starting to build up.

Daily cleaning: your best summer routine

During the holidays, it’s normal for our routines to shift, but you shouldn’t neglect cleaning your hearing aids. Even more so if you’re somewhere hotter or more humid than usual. Ideally, spend a few minutes every night checking and cleaning your devices.

Use the microfibre cloth to clean the surface, remove any wax residue with the brush, and check the filters. Make sure there’s no moisture inside the mould or casing. If you notice anything unusual (odd smells, a sticky feeling, or intermittent buzzing), don’t let it go — act as soon as possible.

Extra power: batteries and charging

If your hearing aids run on batteries, bring enough to cover every day of your trip. Even though you can buy more at your destination, it’s not always easy to find the right type or brand. Keep batteries somewhere cool and dry, and replace them as soon as you notice reduced performance.

If your model is rechargeable, remember to bring the charger, and if you’re travelling abroad, make sure to bring a compatible plug adapter. Some chargers also have a built-in battery for use while travelling if you don’t have access to a power outlet. These are great for hiking routes, excursions or camping.

Noisy environments: protecting your ears and your hearing aids

Holidays can also mean very noisy environments: concerts, festivals, fairs, local celebrations… In these situations, it’s a good idea to adjust your hearing aid’s programme if your model allows it, or use hearing protection to avoid overexposure to noise.

Some patients also take the chance to disconnect and enjoy moments without their devices in, always safely. If you’re going to take your hearing aids out in public places, make sure to store them properly and avoid leaving them loose in bags or backpacks.

Common travel problems: when to ask for help

Despite all the precautions, you might notice your hearing aids aren’t working quite the same while travelling. The most common signs that something isn’t right include:

  • Distorted or intermittent sound.
  • Battery life shorter than usual.
  • Unexpected buzzing or noises.
  • Visible moisture or condensation.
  • A blocked feeling or loss of volume.

If your stay goes on for quite a while and a fault comes up while you’re away from home, don’t hesitate to contact your hearing care specialist, as they can recommend a hearing centre near you that can help.

If this happens and basic cleaning or a battery change doesn’t fix it, it’s best to visit a trusted hearing centre once you’re back. At BienestarAudio we’ll be happy to check your hearing aids, give them a thorough clean, and adjust any settings you need.

Travelling with hearing aids in summer isn’t just possible — it can be entirely comfortable and safe if you follow these tips. With good planning, simple routines and the right care, your hearing aids will be ready to go with you on every adventure, working properly and sounding their best.

Remember that your hearing is part of your wellbeing and deserves the same attention as any other aspect of your health while travelling. If you have questions, or need a check-up before you leave or after you get back from holiday, our hearing centre is here to help.
