In this article, we’ll look at 5 types of earplugs, which is best for each situation, and how to use them correctly.
Foam noise-reduction earplugs

The first type of noise-reduction earplug is the foam earplug, the cheapest option, which is why it’s widely used in noisy industrial settings such as car factories or construction sites.
These earplugs offer attenuation of around 29 dB, which is a high level, but the materials they’re usually made from — polyurethane or PVC — can irritate the ear canal.
Because of this, in our view, we can only recommend them for occasional use in very noisy spaces.
Another issue our patients mention after using this type of earplug is that they can’t follow a conversation while wearing them, for example, on a factory floor. This is because the attenuation is flat across all frequencies, so they’re not designed to preserve good sound quality, whether that’s a colleague’s voice or music.
For people with long-term noise exposure, we always recommend custom-made earplugs, which we’ll cover further on.
Silicone noise-reduction earplugs

This earplug is usually transparent and ribbed. It offers less noise attenuation than foam earplugs, at around 15 dB.
It also has flat attenuation, meaning it affects all frequencies, but since it’s lower, it preserves better sound quality.
It’s made from an elastic polymer, better known as silicone. This material irritates the skin less than foam earplugs.
Custom-made earplugs with noise-reduction filter

Custom-made earplugs fit your ear perfectly, making them more comfortable to insert than standard earplugs, more comfortable for daily use, and sealing the ear better, which means the attenuation you want can be controlled more precisely thanks to the filters.
The level of attenuation depends on the filter used, and can be tailored to each person’s needs. For example, for someone working in an industrial environment, a non-linear filter might be recommended, with up to 38 dB of protection at the higher frequencies, but less reduction at conversational frequencies, so they can still talk with colleagues.
In our view, this is the type of earplug that everyone continuously exposed to noise should be using, since it offers the best combination of comfort and sound isolation. If you have any questions specific to your profession, you can contact us or write to us on our online consultation page.
Custom-made sleep earplugs

The sleep earplug is a custom-made earplug crafted from soft silicone, making it very comfortable to wear all night long.
These earplugs offer lower attenuation compared to other solutions, but enough to help improve sleep, since night-time environments tend to be much quieter.
The main advantage over foam earplugs is that the materials they’re made from cause fewer irritation issues around the outer ear.
Shooting earplugs

Shooting earplugs, also known as hunter’s earplugs, are a special type of earplug with a battery-powered active filter.
This filter can cut off very loud peaks, such as those produced by a gunshot or an explosion, making them perfect for hunters or shooters.
Attenuation can reach up to 40 dB, and the earplugs have the advantage of switchable programmes, letting the filter level be set for each situation.

Frequently asked questions
The most common types of earplugs are foam noise-reduction earplugs, silicone earplugs, custom-made earplugs with a noise-reduction filter, custom-made sleep earplugs, and shooting earplugs for hunters.
Foam earplugs can attenuate around 29 dB. They’re very inexpensive and used in high-noise environments such as factories or construction sites, but can cause discomfort if worn for many hours.
They fit the ear perfectly, making them very comfortable, and allow attenuation to be controlled with specific filters, tailored to each person’s needs (for example, more protection at high frequencies, while keeping conversation clear).
Custom-made sleep earplugs are made from soft silicone and offer moderate attenuation, enough for quieter night-time environments. They’re recommended when noise makes it hard to fall or stay asleep, or during trips and stays in noisy places.
If you spend long periods in noisy environments, custom-made earplugs with a noise-reduction filter are ideal, since they combine comfort, adaptability and better attenuation control, protecting your hearing without completely blocking out communication.
